Murata

PTC thermistors are elements whose resistance rises with an increase in temperature, and find use in applications such as temperature sensing and current limitation.

Murata POSISTOR® PTC thermistors employ elements based on ceramics (featuring) good reliability and performance. The diverse product range not only includes different shapes (SMD chip and lead types), but also covers diverse applications such as overcurrent protection, overheat sensing, and inrush current suppression.

Features:

 

  • Exploiting the PTC characteristic (a sharp increase in resistance above a certain temperature), the PRF series chip PTC thermistors are used for overheat sensing in FETs, power ICs, and other heat generating areas. Use of the sharp change in electrical resistance translates into outstanding noise resistance. Sharp changes in resistance make it possible to accurately detect overheating in multiple areas using a very simple circuit connecting PTC thermistors in series.
    This allows the customer to reduce the number of IC ports, thereby downsizing equipment.

  • The PRG series (Resettable fuse) of PTC thermistors for overcurrent protection device features rapid operation to protect the circuit as an overcurrent is generated, for example due to a short circuit. These products automatically return to their initial state when the overcurrent is eliminated and can be used repeatedly.
    Use of ceramics material means high reliability and quick protection after short circuits, allowing the customer to make equipment safer and maintenance-free.
    Compared with organic PTC elements and chip resistors having the same characteristics, the PRG series features higher withstand voltage and higher power capacity, making it possible to reduce the chip size. This helps the customer downsize equipment.

  • The PTGL series (Resettable fuse) finds broad uses in end products for overcurrent protection in the event of a short circuit and for the suppression of a surge current generated upon activation of the product. Use of ceramics material means high reliability, allowing the customer to make end products safer and maintenance-free.
    Using Murata’s outstanding ceramic technology, different sub-series are available to meet varying customer needs: The narrow current band sub-series delivers the industry’s smallest resistance deviation (±10%). Other lower-level series include PTC thermistors for large currents and high voltages.
