Production & Refueling

Hydrogen might be the most abundant element on earth but it can be found rarely in its pure form. The extraction process needs energy but hydrogen can be produced or extracted using virtually any primary source of energy, such as fossil, nuclear energy and renewable energy sources, such as wind or solar. This diversity of potential supply sources makes hydrogen such a promising energy carrier.

Electrolysis (process where water (H2O) is split into hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2) gas with energy input) is the preferred pathway in Europe for production. Electrolyzes will account for 85 percent of installed capacity and produce 75 percent of hydrogen volumes in 2030.

From the production to the end user. Hydrogen is easy to transport in long-distance and can be transported in different formats like pipelines or compressed in gas cylinders. Fueling stations are the transfer point to public usage. The systems are based on a technology container including compressor and cooling systems, valves and control units. The final step in hydrogen refueling takes place at the dispenser unit. This unit incorporates a nozzle, filling hose, display and control technology.
