A ventilator is a life support machine that monitors and forces breathing either during an operation or within an intensive care unit. Ventilators are also used during treatment for a serious lung disease or infection, such as COVID-19. The ventilator pushes oxygen into the lungs to help people breathe easier or to assist people who have lost the ability to breathe on their own and removes carbon dioxide from the body. Oxygen concentrators reduce the level of nitrogen in the air and increase the oxygen level in the air and blood, helping the patient to breathe more easily. They are increasingly being used for patient care in the home and portable version are now available giving better support to patients with respiratory illnesses like COPD. Patient monitoring is crucial to understanding a patient’s medical status. Modern patient monitoring requires the use of IOT-powered devices, to be used in intensive care, operating rooms, and at the patient’s home. Patient monitors include SpO₂ (oxygen saturation), blood pressure, respiration, temperature, glucose and ECGs monitoring.

Non-Contact Temperature Monitoring devices use Thermopile IR technology for a high sensitivity, fast response time and are relatively low cost solutions. NTC sensors are used in contact temperature measurements yielding fast accurate readings in 4-10 seconds. These and other related sensors are available at TTI. 

Pulse oximetry involves sensors for determining arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2) and pulse rate (PR) of a patient through an attached finger sensor-clip; these can be reusable by complete submersion in cleaning liquid or they can be disposable items. TTI stocks a range of Honeywell EnviteC SpO₂ sensors for this specific application.

Infusion pumps deliver the correct dosage of fluid, medicines or nutrients to the patient, through the bloodstream or directly to the stomach. Modern infusion pumps are portable and smaller than ever, allowing them to be used in the home, as well as in hospital wards and intensive care units. Infusion pumps use force sensors to measure the pressure inside the tube to detect blockages and determine when fluid bags need to be changed. MagnetoResistive (MR) position sensors monitor the placement of the tube in the pump cavity to ensure correct orientation and help with control of the pump motor speed.

Labratory automation systems and equipment remain a hot topic in the industry, as medical professionals seek to improve the efficiency and accuracy of testing. Reducing human exposure and intervention with harmful substances and diseases is also a critical part of the lab automation. The automated system consists of robots/cobots, barcode scanners, conveyor systems, machine vision and control systems. Within these systems, the sample volume and accuracy of flow of the liquids needs to be measured with liquid level and flow sensors and if gas is involved, gas sensors are needed to control the flow during analysis. Position sensors and machine vision sensors are needed for cobot/robotic functions and photo-sensors are needed on the conveyor system.
